چکیده

7 Hull cleaning before repainting is a key operation in the 8 maintenance of ships. For more than a decade, a means to 9 improve this operation has been sought through robotization 10 and the use of different techniques such as grit blasting and 11 ultra high pressure water jetting. Despite this, it continues to 12 be standard practice in shipyards that this process is carried 13 out manually. This paper presents a family of robots that 14 aims to offer important improvements to the process as well 15 as satisfying, to a great extent, all the operative requirements 16 of efficiency, security, and respect for the environment that 17 shipyards nowadays demand. It is described the family of 18 devices with emphasis on the mechanical design. This set 19 consists of two vertical robotic towers and a robot climber. 20 In addition, it is shown the control architecture of the global 21 system. Finally, operative results are presented together with 22 a comparison between the performance achieved in shipyards 23 through the use of these robots and those obtained with a 24 manual process. 25

Controlling Marine Fouling with Antifouling Paints and Underwater Hull Cleaning

trolling marine fouling on ships’ hulls has been considered essential since the earliest days of marine transport. It has been estimated that without any attempt to control fouling, shipping would require 40% more power, equal to about 72 million tonnes of additional fuel per year.1 Therefore, without an effective antifouling system, today’s marine transport industry would undoubtedly grind to ...

Technical Note: An opportunity cost maintenance scheduling framework for a fleet of ships: A case study

The conventional method towards deriving schedule for a fleet of ships to minimize cost alone has the short-coming of not addressing the problem of operation revenue losses associated with delays during maintenance at ships dockyards. In this paper, a preventive maintenance schedule for a fleet of ships that incorporates op-portunity cost is presented. The idea is to assign a penalty cost to al...

A Comparative Study for the Removal of Methylene Blue Dye from Aqueous Solution by Novel Activated Carbon Based Adsorbents

This study was conducted to assess the ability of the studied adsorbent, i.e. raw oak fruit hulls and the activated carbon prepared from oak fruit hull for removing the Methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution. This study was conducted under various effective parameters, e.g., contact time, pH, MB concentration, adsorbent concentration. The optimum amount of each parameter was determined a...
